Cork 1720’s national – Crosshaven
We had two great races today. Although it’s very cold on the water the racing is really fantastic. There are 15 Cork 1720s in the Irish National competition in Crosshaven and we came third and fourth in the two races today. So overall we are second.
As everyone knows Crosshaven is home to the oldest yacht club being the Royal Cork which was founded in 1720 and of course gave its name to the Cork 1720. It is such an exciting boat to race and when I started sailing the Cork 1720 it really reminded me of my youth and how exciting sailing could really be.
Anyway on the first race the wot-tac predicted the starboard windward start line bias absolutely right each time. That gave this a brilliant start enabling us to get ahead of the rest of the fleet. The wind had picked up by the second race but again we were able to get fantastic start and it was great beating up to the windward mark and seeing the others in the fleet trying to guess where the wind was going to be over the side of the boat. Using the wot-tac is the greatest sailing tip I can give to anybody. When you can predict wind angles over the side of the boat it makes the rest of the sailing so much easier.
I was reading in the yachts and yachting that the European Cork 1720 Championship is to be be held once again in Baltimore, West Cork from 9th to 12th September 2011. There were 15 boats in last year’s event and the organisers are hoping to attract in excess of 20 boats this year. See you might see L J therefore the European championship as well.
